    Integral equation method for the electromagnetic wave propagation in stratified anisotropic dielectric-magnetic materials

    We investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in stratified anisotropic dielectric-magnetic materials using the integral equation method (IEM). Based on the superposition principle, we use Hertz vector formulations of radiated fields to study the interaction of wave with matter. We derive in a new way the dispersion relation, Snell's law and reflection/transmission coefficients by self-consistent analyses. Moreover, we find two new forms of the generalized extinction theorem. Applying the IEM, we investigate the wave propagation through a slab and disclose the underlying physics which are further verified by numerical simulations. The results lead to a unified framework of the IEM for the propagation of wave incident either from a medium or vacuum in stratified dielectric-magnetic materials.Comment: 14pages, 3figure

    Twofold Structured Features-Based Siamese Network for Infrared Target Tracking

    Nowadays, infrared target tracking has been a critical technology in the field of computer vision and has many applications, such as motion analysis, pedestrian surveillance, intelligent detection, and so forth. Unfortunately, due to the lack of color, texture and other detailed information, tracking drift often occurs when the tracker encounters infrared targets that vary in size or shape. To address this issue, we present a twofold structured features-based Siamese network for infrared target tracking. First of all, in order to improve the discriminative capacity for infrared targets, a novel feature fusion network is proposed to fuse both shallow spatial information and deep semantic information into the extracted features in a comprehensive manner. Then, a multi-template update module based on template update mechanism is designed to effectively deal with interferences from target appearance changes which are prone to cause early tracking failures. Finally, both qualitative and quantitative experiments are carried out on VOT-TIR 2016 dataset, which demonstrates that our method achieves the balance of promising tracking performance and real-time tracking speed against other out-of-the-art trackers.Comment: 13 pages,9 figures,references adde

    Remnant cholesterol is associated with cardiovascular mortality

    Background: Genetic, observational, and clinical intervention studies indicate that circulating levels of remnant cholesterol (RC) are associated with cardiovascular diseases. However, the predictive value of RC for cardiovascular mortality in the general population remains unclear. Methods: Our study population comprised 19,650 adults in the United States from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (1999–2014). RC was calculated from non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) minus low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) determined by the Sampson formula. Multivariate Cox regression, restricted cubic spline analysis, and subgroup analysis were applied to explore the relationship of RC with cardiovascular mortality. Results: The mean age of the study cohort was 46.4 ± 19.2 years, and 48.7% of participants were male. During a median follow-up of 93 months, 382 (1.9%) cardiovascular deaths occurred. In a fully adjusted Cox regression model, log RC was significantly associated with cardiovascular mortality [hazard ratio (HR) 2.82; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.17–6.81]. The restricted cubic spline curve indicated that log RC had a linear association with cardiovascular mortality (p for non-linearity = 0.899). People with higher LDL-C (≥130 mg/dL), higher RC [≥25.7/23.7 mg/dL in males/females corresponding to the LDL-C clinical cutoff point (130 mg/dL)] and abnormal HDL-C (<40/50 mg/dL in males/females) levels had a higher risk of cardiovascular mortality (HR 2.18; 95% CI 1.13–4.21 in males and HR 2.19; 95% CI 1.24–3.88 in females) than the reference group (lower LDL-C, lower RC and normal HDL-C levels). Conclusions: Elevated RC levels were associated with cardiovascular mortality independent of traditional risk factors

    In the simplest little Higgs model the new flavor-changing interactions between heavy neutrinos and the Standard Model leptons can generate contributions to some lepton flavor violating decays of ZZ-boson at one-loop level, such as Zτ±μZ \to \tau^{\pm}\mu^{\mp}, Zτ±eZ\to \tau^{\pm}e^{\mp}, and Zμ±eZ \to \mu^{\pm}e^{\mp}. We examine the decay modes, and find that the branching ratios can reach 10710^{-7} for the three decays, which should be accessible at the GigaZZ option of the ILC.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure

    Pre‐symptomatic transmission of novel coronavirus in community settings

    We used contact tracing to document how COVID‐19 was transmitted across 5 generations involving 10 cases, starting with an individual who became ill on January 27. We calculated the incubation period of the cases as the interval between infection and development of symptoms. The median incubation period was 6.0 days (interquartile range, 3.5‐9.5 days). The last two generations were infected in public places, 3 and 4 days prior to the onset of illness in their infectors. Both had certain underlying conditions and comorbidity.     Topology is revolutionizing photonics, bringing with it new theoretical discoveries and a wealth of potential applications. This field was inspired by the discovery of topological insulators, in which interfacial electrons transport without dissipation even in the presence of impurities. Similarly, new optical mirrors of different wave-vector space topologies have been constructed to support new states of light propagating at their interfaces. These novel waveguides allow light to flow around large imperfections without back-reflection.     Resveratrol ameliorates maternal immune activation-associated cognitive impairment in adult male offspring by relieving inflammation and improving synaptic dysfunction

    Maternal exposure to inflammation may represent a major risk factor for neuropsychiatric disorders with associated cognitive dysfunction in offspring in later life. Growing evidence has suggested that resveratrol exerts a beneficial effect on cognitive impairment via its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and by ameliorating synaptic dysfunction. However, how resveratrol affects maternal immune activation-induced cognitive dysfunction and the underlying mechanisms are unclear. In the present study, pregnant dams were given an intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 50 μg/kg) on gestational day 15. Subsequently, the offspring mice were treated or not with resveratrol (40 mg/kg) from postnatal day (PND) 60 to PND 88. Male offspring were selected for the evaluation of cognitive function using the Morris water maze test. The hippocampal levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines were examined by ELISA. The mRNA and protein levels of sirtuin-1 (SIRT1), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), postsynaptic density protein 95 (PSD-95), and synaptophysin (SYP) were determined by RT-qPCR and western blot, respectively. The results showed that male offspring mice exposed to LPS in utero exhibited learning and memory impairment. Additionally, the levels of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) were increased while those of SIRT1, BDNF, PSD-95, and SYP were decreased in male offspring of LPS-treated mothers. Treatment with resveratrol reversed cognitive impairment and attenuated the increase in the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by maternal immune activation in the offspring mice. Furthermore, resveratrol reversed the deleterious effects of maternal immune activation on SIRT1, BDNF, PSD-95, and SYP levels in the hippocampus. Collectively, our results suggested that resveratrol can effectively improve learning and memory impairment induced by maternal immune activation via the modulation of inflammation and synaptic dysfunction
